5 Essential Cocktails for March 2023

Image
Each month, Chilled is bringing you five essential cocktails based on our National Drink Day Calendar . Don’t forget to reference it so you can prepare for the upcoming holidays.   As the season begins to close, it’s the last chance to enjoy those winter-inspired cocktails . Spring is around the corner but while we wait for the sunshine and flowers, indulge in one of these craft cocktails. Bar owner tip: Create a food pairing for each cocktail this month. Instead of just offering the drink, have a chef create a dish to accompany the drink. Those with a sophisticated palette will gravitate. Here are five cocktails you should sip this March.     Perfect “Baklava” Manhattan Starting the month strong with National Peanut Butter Lovers Day (3/1) . This delicious twist on a classic will surprise anyone who sips it. The peanut butter whiskey offers a sweet, dessert-like taste, while the bourbon gives that classic manhattan flavor. Top the cocktail off with a few drops of chocolate w

Wara can be found in the north and north-central areas of Nigeria, the latter of which is the region veteran chef Ayo Balogun hails from. He opened the buzzy 15-seat Brooklyn restaurant, one of Eater’s Best New Restaurants of 2022 , after winning the city over with a dinner series called Iya Eba in the late summer of 2020. “I spent a week in Lagos with my uncle and one night he took me around. We went to Ikoyi Club, we went to eat at a place called Iya Eba,” Balogun says. “So, [that night] we went from some posh place to some dive place to some place under the bridge, it was just some wild night. Farmworkers Finally Won Overtime Pay. Now the Industry Wants to Repeal It.

A farm worker picks beets on a California farm last year. | RJ Sangosti/MediaNews Group/The Denver Post via Getty Images Growers and workers are at odds over laws that mandate overtime for the folks literally picking our food This story was originally published on Civil Eats . In early February, around 2,000 people called in to a hearing on Washington farmworkers’ right to overtime pay. The conversation was tense as farmworkers, advocates, and members of the agriculture industry all weighed in. The crowd had convened to discuss a Senate bill that would create a “seasonal exemption” to a 2021 law designed to pay farmworkers for overtime. If it passed, farmers wouldn’t have to pay overtime for 12 weeks (of the grower’s choice) per year. Growers saw this as a compromise that would reflect the narrow harvest periods of some crops, like hops and asparagus, while shoring up farm economies. But many farmworker and labor advocates saw this as rolling back the hard-won right to overti

Please Stop Buying Food From Social Media Influencers

Image
The pink sauce, as it now appears on Walmart’s website. | Walmart When we buy food off of TikTok, what are we getting, really? Everyone on TikTok and Instagram is trying to make a buck in one way or another. From the creator fund to sponsored content and upstart new businesses seeking to capitalize on a newly massive social media following, influencers are cashing in. And in an increasingly common number of instances, these ventures involve making and selling food. But, regardless of how excited you are about the newest trend on TikTok, buying things that you plan to ingest from random influencers on social media is an objectively terrible idea, and no one should do it. Perhaps the most obvious example of this is Chef Pii’s Pink Sauce. The dragon-fruit-spiked dressing went viral on TikTok first because of its vibrant magenta hue and later because of backlash after customers pointed out bottles were mislabeled , complained of leakage, and questioned whether the sauce, which liste

Use the New Panera Purse to Carry a Better Sandwich

Image
Imagine if that were a better sandwich? | Noah Fecks/Panera Panera’s BAGuette is meant to carry its baguette sandwiches, but you could stuff it with any hoagie or sub you desire I’m a gal on the go, which has often meant scarfing down a bodega turkey sandwich unearthed from the bottom of my tote bag between commitments. You may think this means I have longed for a sleeker, more sophisticated sandwich transportation option, but honestly I never thought twice about it. Panera, though, clearly saw there was a problem to be solved and has created the BAGuette. Panera is taking the “baguette bag,” a very Y2K style first introduced by Fendi , seriously, and launching a limited-edition run of 500 embossed green purses in conjunction with New York Fashion Week. Presumably no one at New York Fashion Week is much concerned with Panera, but food brands are increasingly looking to fashion collaborations to gain clout. Each purse, which costs $39.50, is long and thin and “perfectly sized to c

The Pistachio Moment Is Already My Favorite Food Trend of 2023

Image
Give me pistachio anything. | Shutterstock/Eater From pistachio lattes to pistachio perfume, the humble nut can provide us all with some welcome indulgence In case you haven’t noticed, pistachio is really having a moment right now. And no, I’m not talking about the humble nut itself, vibrant green and commonly grown in California, at least not in its original form. Nope, right now it’s all about the flavor of pistachio, which is earning a ton of buzz as it’s being stirred into cocktails , scenting candles , frozen into Disney’s iconic Dole Whips , and generally working its way into the hearts of all who love its inviting, indulgent nuttiness. And I couldn’t be more thrilled. The most mainstream example of the current pistachio obsession is Starbucks’s popular line-up of pistachio drinks, first launched in 2019. There’s a cold brew topped with pistachio-flavored cold foam, plus a pistachio latte served hot or cold; both are dominating my social media feeds. There’s also the extreme

Netflix’s ‘The Makanai’ Is a Soothing Delight for Those Who Measure Their Lives in Meals

Image
Netflix If you love Japanese food, you should be watching “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House” I’m an easy sell when it comes to Japanese television shows about food, from Midnight Diner to Samurai Gourmet (as my writing history can attest ), so it’s probably not surprising that Netflix was quick to deliver me The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House . The show is a bit of a slow roll, but it’s easy to get transfixed by its heartwarming story about the young women training to be geisha (“geiko” in the Kyoto dialect), and the would-be trainee Kiyo (Nana Mori), who finds her true calling as the makanai, chief cook for the household. Kiyo’s friendship with Sumire (Natsuki Deguchi), her childhood companion whose dream to become a maiko (or geiko in training) inspired their apprenticeship, is at the heart of the show, a quietly feminist story where each character forges a different path to achieve their dreams. Kiyo’s mind is never far away from the next meal she’s planning:
