42 Versatile Recipes to Celebrate Chickpeas Every Which Way

If you're anything like me (read: a vegetarian; a lover of good food; a sorta impatient person), chickpeas are in heavy rotation in your cooking—especially now. As of this writing, a pound of the dried stuff and seven cans of cooked chickpeas are hanging out in my pantry, just waiting to be used. (The dried ones are calling for a long Sunday simmer as I putter around the house.) You need no telling how flexible, satiating, and flat-out delicious chickpeas can be, so I won't tell you. I'll just show off 42 ways these little legumes strut their stuff, in crunchy-roasted snacks, slurpable stews, and sweets (yes!) alike. Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/2XEjaAO via IFTTT

Looking to Build a Solid Home Bar Over the Next Year

I no longer live with an alcoholic/thief roommate so I am looking to really build a nice basic bar setup, by purchasing one liquor a month for the next year. I found an article that suggested the following twelve, and was hoping for some feedback if these are a good baseline and maybe suggestions for what brand to get of each one. The only thing I know a little bit about what I love is Bourbon/Rye (Bulleitt Brand) Thank you in advance. Irish Cream Deserves Your Respect

Image
Victor Moussa /Shutterstock Baileys and other Irish creams give off winter seasonal vibes, but enjoyment of the drink shouldn’t be limited to just a few months In the world of coffee, flavor can be controversial. Many aficionados insist that the beverage should be enjoyed straight-up so that the drinker can fully take advantage of the impressive bouquet of flavors that well-roasted beans can infuse into hot water. But for the rest of us normies, there is Irish cream. For anyone who grew up in the ’90s, Irish cream — a creamy liqueur with hints of chocolate and whiskey — was a very fancy, very adult beverage. It’s what your parents added to their espresso martinis at holiday parties, and what mom poured into her coffee on Christmas morning when she was tired of hearing you shriek about your new Lego set. Now it’s considered totally pedestrian, replaced in cocktail bars with bartender-crafted cream liqueurs and displaced from bougie coffee bars by fancier, trendier flavors like lav

16 Ideas for Leftover Prime Rib (Other Than, You Know, Just Eating It)

So you did the thing. To the delight of your family and friends, you herb-rubbed, temped, roasted, temped again, carved, and served up a prime rib during the holiday season . But now, you've found yourself with a bit of a (tasty) problem: What to do with all of the leftover prime rib roast? Sure it’s easy enough to make a leftover prime rib sandwich topped with caramelized onions , a dollop of sour cream , and au jus for dipping, but that’s not exactly reinventing the wheel (though it does sound damn tasty). We’ve got you covered. From tacos to pho, here are 16 ways to keep the good prime rib times going. Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/2PTkVpI via IFTTT

For Some Food Bloggers, Digital Cookbooks Are Better Than Print

Image
Given the costs of creating a print version, going directly online can have higher dividends In June, Maria Hammonds took her digital cookbooks off her website. The blogger behind the Instagram account Deep Fried Honey and the recipe site of the same name had produced five e-books since 2018, which her readers could purchase online, paying through Paypal or Venmo, and receive their book via PDF download. For Hammonds, the books were a way to get paid for time-consuming labor and expensive production on a project that wasn’t even her primary job. But once Hammonds was receiving enough ad revenue from the site to be adequately compensated, she took the books down. “I’m a communist. I was never in this for money,” Hammonds says. “I like for things to not be behind a paywall. Money is hard to come by, and I’m very particular with people spending it in any way to support me.” Since followers might worry they were losing access to recipes that appeared only in the books and not on her bl

REQUEST: Holiday Cocktails

I was hoping to gather from some of you fine folks, ideas for a Holiday Cocktail. Every year I try to find a new cocktail to bring to the In-laws for Christmas. Last year I did a hot buttered rum that was not terribly popular, and the bad news is I found out about it this afternoon. This leaves me 3 weeks to find and perfect a new (to us) Christmas cocktail. I'd prefer to avoid nogs, but if you have a good one let me know, and we've done mulled wine to death. Help me out, and share your favorite Christmasy beverages! submitted by /u/BottledAzoth [link] [comments]

Infused-gin…I’m obsessed and want to make more.

I made earl grey tea-infused dry gin the other night for the famous Earl Grey MarTEAni. And holy moly…that is a great drink. Really blew my mind. I love gin sours in general, but I was worried the tea might make for a bitter bite I didn’t want. I need not have worried. I infused for about two hours and it was perfect. So now I’m obsessed with the idea of infusing stuff. What should I try next? submitted by /u/pickledtreats [link] [comments]

30 White Elephant Gifts Under $25 You’ll Want To Keep Yourself

The holidays usually offer (most of) us some reprieve from the chaos of everyday life, but the pandemic has added another layer of confusion and stress. Life right now is anything but perfect, and for some of us, giving a bunch of perfectly-wrapped presents may not be the vibe, or may not be feasible. Thankfully, a white elephant party lets you revel in this imperfect mess with gifts that are so irrelevant you can’t imagine how they were made, or so genius that you can't imagine how you don't already own five of them. They take the pressure out of finding the perfect present and instead make gift giving about spending time with people you love. I still remember my first one even a decade later. It wasn’t the preppy headband set I left with that made its mark on me, but the pure, unadulterated joy of watching friends and family try to steal each other's gifts and the belly laughs that came with it. Welcome Home: What have we made? What are our thoughts?

The book's been out for a week or so now, and I imagine most of us who ordered it have tried at least one of the recipes and have some thoughts to share about the book. I'm just curious as to what! Going first, I have to say the the majority of the prose was not that interesting to me - most of what they discussed I was already aware of, and unlike the Codex I didn't feel like it presented anything new in terms of techniques or minor but significant changes. I mostly bought it for the recipes though so not particularly bothered. In terms of those, I made a Black Powder first, which was pretty disappointing - mezcal and armagnac, but it was basically just a glass of mezcal. Her Name is Joy, a scotch and Jamaican rum Old Fashioned, was better, and the Lost Horizon combining Jamaican rum and brandy with banana liqueur and Fernet was again great. Tonight I made an Oculus, a Shannon drink, and that was phenomenal - apples, vermouth, aquavit and fennel liqueur. I've got my

What We Miss When Vacation Rentals Become Contactless

Image
Shared lodging like bed and breakfasts, boarding houses, and room rentals are falling out of favor, replaced by contactless, host-less vacation rentals. But at what cost? As planes take off from Mohammed V International Airport just outside Casablanca, there are usually a few common souvenir items bouncing around the cargo hold: colorful Berber rugs, freshly dyed leather jackets, delicately patterned lanterns, tightly woven baskets, and other purchases from the souks. I, however, came back with boiled eggs. They weren’t packed away in the cargo hold; they were plastered in my memory. Okay, yes, I got a few rugs and a jacket too, but three years after my trip, my affection for boiled eggs is my most enduring souvenir. I learned to love them in a creaky, overflowing Tangier riad, the home of my Airbnb host. The doting septuagenarian welcomed me and my partner after a long train ride from Madrid and a short ferry ride across the Strait of Gibraltar, plying us with sugary mint tea and

Making homemade Frambocello (limoncello variant with raspberries)

I already have experience with making limoncello at home by basicly using these ingredients: - 1L food grade alcohol 96% - 8 lemons ~1kg - 800g sugar - 1L water By far one of the best recipes when done correctly. But im wondering i know there is a licor called Frambocello which uses raspberries instead of lemons. So far i've found online only one recipe that uses vodka to extract the flavour. But i'd like to know if i could do it with 96% alcohol too so that i use kind of the same recipe i use for the limoncello. My only problem being tuning the amount of raspberries that i want to add to the recipe to replace the lemon zest. Does anybody have another recipe or experience with this? submitted by /u/manetje [link] [comments]

28 Make-Ahead Christmas Appetizers for a Stress-Free Holiday

A few years back, I came to the realization that the star of my holiday table is not in fact the turkey, or the ham, or even the crown rib roast. Though we all ostensibly come together for the picture-perfect moment when Dad carves up the big bird, or slices up the roast, the real excitement is the flurry of activity that happens around cocktail hour. Regardless of what's on the dinner menu, everyone jumps for the tartlets, canapés, and mile-long cheese board I place out hours before dinnertime. Who doesn’t love tasting different bites of cheesy, gooey, savory snacks before all the mashed potatoes and gravy? I also realized that as much as my guests and I love appetizers, I seem to dread my appetizer prep each year (let’s face it—making 100 of anything can be time-consuming and just a little stressful). But, knowing I couldn’t give up my favorite little bites (give the people what they want!), I thought about what I could do to get them checked off the list well ahead of the big

Italian Margarita w/ Amaretto Variations

Making an Italian centric holiday meal for friends this weekend and was thinking of serving Italian margaritas as the cocktail for the night. For those that don't know, an Italian margarita is the same as a classic margarita except amaretto is swapped for Cointreau. I've served them before to mixed results as amaretto seems to be a polarizing liqueur. I'm wondering if anybody has made any Italian margarita variations that may still highlight the amaretto but cut down on it's sweetness? TIA! submitted by /u/thevagabond007 [link] [comments]

How Baba's Surprise Pastries Kept Our Family Together

Good food is worth a thousand words—sometimes more. In My Family Recipe , a writer shares the story of a single dish that's meaningful to them and their loved ones. The packages began arriving in early April, a few weeks after the pandemic confined my father to his home . The first box contained sambusac, Iraqi pastries filled, variably, with chickpea paste, salted cheese, or a mix of nuts, sugar, and cinnamon. The next box carried kubbot, deep-fried Iraqi dumplings with ground meat, cumin, cardamom, and pine nuts. After that came jars of quince jam and Tupperwares of stuffed grape leaves, which we shared with our neighbors. The fifth box—this time at my son’s request—delivered gaurag, a crunchy Iraqi flatbread, packaged in enough Bubble Wrap to survive the flight from Los Angeles to the Bronx intact. It did.
