How the Weed and Wine Worlds are Merging

In The Green Scene, there's no such thing as a silly question about cannabis. What's the difference between THC and CBD? How the heck do I make edibles at home? What home design advice can dispensaries teach me? Kick back—we have the answers. One of the first things that I was told about weed and wine is that the two do not mix. In my college year, the term “twisted” was used when someone got really drunk and high at the same time, and it was the definition of unintentionally killing the vibe of a good theater-kid party. It wasn’t until I spoke to Karli Warner, the co-founder and CMO of The Garden Society, that I was introduced to the possibilities of how these two worlds can coexist deliciously. What Exactly Is Tahini?

You know tahini as the lead actor in hummus , tahini dressing , and our favorite dairy-free chocolate chip cookies . But with its nutty flavor, smooth and creamy texture, and vegan-friendly ingredients list, you might wonder, “what exactly is tahini anyway?” Well, it’s made from sesame seeds…and more sesame seeds…and more sesame seeds…and that’s really it! The seeds are ground until they form a thin paste-like sauce—it’s the same process for making any type of nut butter, except that instead of cashews or almonds, you’re using sesame seeds! Tahini is vegan, gluten-free , and nut-free; unless you have a sesame allergy, it’s totally safe to eat. From Our Shop Seed + Mill Organic Tahini Trio $40 Seed + Mill Sampler Set $48 Seed + Mill Pantry Pack $58 How to Store Tahini Tahini lasts forever. Okay…not quite, but close! According to Seed & Mill, a jar of unopened tahini will last for up to 18 months if stored in a cool, dry place. Onc

The 14 Best Storage Containers for Every Kind of Food (& Leaky Soups)

I get hungry roughly every 15 minutes two hours, which means that I invariably have a small meal or a variety of snacks stashed on me at all times. So it’s not surprising that I’ve tried out every kind of reusable container and food storage option for meal prepping, packing up freezer-friendly dinners , and stocking my cabinets with staples that could easily go stale in the wrong container. After much trial and error (and ruined bags and snacks alike), I’ve figured out the best ways to keep precious snacks intact while also keeping my purse, fridge, and pantry organized—no crushed pita chips in sight. Why Hemp Could Become Your New Favorite Bed Linen

Up until recently, our choice of sheets was limited to cotton percale, sateen, or flannel, but today there are a dizzying array of fibers and weaves to choose from. Linen (aka flax), bamboo, and eucalyptus are among the many natural fibers being woven into bedding. Along with these new fibers have come an equally large number of sustainability claims to wade through. So, we sought out the experts to explain the latest sustainable bedding fiber: Hemp. Among the latest crop of bedding fibers, there’s a reason hemp is a newcomer. The United States started to abandon industrial hemp cultivation starting in 1937 when The Marijuana Tax Act placed a tax on cannabis sales, including hemp. Then, the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 virtually banned the production of industrial hemp, which is really sort of silly because marijuana, whose psychotropic properties our government had intended to prohibit, is a different plant than industrial hemp (aka cannabis sativa). It wasn’t until the 2018 Far

Thinking About Composting? This Is Your Ultimate Guide

When we polled our community, we found that 83 percent of you who don’t compost would like to start—so we’re here to help! Whether you’re looking for a way to reduce your carbon footprint, create nutrient-rich fertilizer for your garden, or simply stop your trash from smelling, composting is the way to go. When you start composting, all your kitchen scraps, grass trimmings, and fall leaves will be transformed into rich, beneficial soil, and the best part is that it doesn’t require much effort on your part—you mostly just mix it all together and wait! Plus, with the advent of bins that fit in your kitchen (like, ahem, the new Five Two compost bin , it’s easier than ever before to get started. However, I’ll be the first to admit that composting can be intimidating to beginners. I myself had no idea what I was doing at first, and I found myself peering into my compost bin several times a week, asking myself, “Is it working? How do I even know if it’s working?” To assuage my worries and g

6 Ways to Repurpose Leftover Vanilla Bean Pods

Today, Guest Editor  Dorie Greenspan is sharing  five ways to capture every last drop of flavor from vanilla bean pods. Vanilla  is earthy. It's ethereal. It's exotic. It's indispensable in some recipes and, when added to others on a whim, seems essential. And it's expensive . At least the good stuff is, and it's the good stuff that you should be using. Always. If you're using vanilla extract, make sure it's pure . A good whiff should either make your head spin or compel you to dab a little behind your ears. And the beans...ah, the beans. Vanilla beans  are the queens of the vanilla family. The ne plus ultra of flavoring. Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/KW8YGnX via IFTTT

Vegans Rejoice! We Have 18 Passover Recipes for You.

During Passover, certain plant-based foods are already verboten, which makes finding vegan Passover recipes tricky. During the holiday, most Jewish households avoid chametz, or grains that have come in contact with water for longer than 18 minutes. Depending on which ethnocultural group and branch of Judaism one belongs to, there may be other avoided foods during Passover, from rice to sunflower seeds to lentils. (For some, it also means avoiding anything packaged that isn’t explicitly labeled “kosher for Passover,” even if it does fall within the dietary requirements.) This can make nourishing oneself a bit challenging for vegans who thrive on plant-based staples like grains and legumes. When it comes to vegan Passover recipes that meet most of the religious guidelines, lean heavily into vegetables, quinoa, fruit, matzo, and most nuts. Same rules go for dessert—just add (dairy-free) chocolate. From Our Shop Kiddush Cup $89.25 More Colors exclusive Food52 Ve

This Éclair Cake Is So Easy, an 8-Year-Old Could Make It

Éclairs are a staple of the French pastry case, elegant elongated poufs lovingly filled and dunked in ganache or fondant. You might think that means that they’re one of those things that is just too fancy to make at home, or at least not a project you should tackle without having a day or two where you can afford to be leashed to your kitchen. And sure, éclairs can be fiddly to fill without crushing them. But if you want all that éclair flavor without the hassle, the best way to go is with Resident Carolina Gelen’s Éclair Cake , which harnesses the delicacy of the patisserie with good old-fashioned icebox cake. It’s so easy that an 8-year-old can make it—and I should know, because I recently made it with an 8-year-old. Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/AdjOKG5 via IFTTT

Cheech Marin Loves Snacks, Noodles & Decriminalizing Cannabis

11 Best Hand Creams Because Dirty Dishes Mean Dry Hands

When I recently asked my teammates what hand creams they keep in the kitchen, I’m not joking when I say they had thoughts . As home cooks who are constantly roasting and toasting, slicing and dicing, our hands take a major beating every time we wash them—which is about every five minutes. Throw in cold weather temps and a pandemic, and you’ve got a recipe for dry, cracked, itchy skin. That’s why we keep only the thickest, most moisturizing hand creams, lotions, and salves by our sink right next to the soap. These little helpers are the only reason our poor hands would ever forgive us for putting them through the wringer—there’s no excuse not to use them after we dry off. Self-care looks different for everyone. For me, it includes engaging in daily movement, reading as many books as possible, and indulging in some serious couch time. How to Hard-Boil Eggs to Dye for Easter

Every year on the Saturday before Easter, my family gathers around our kitchen table and dyes eggs together. We fill my parents’ set of Corelle Shadow Iris mugs with hot water, a splash of white vinegar, and a few drops of every shade of dye in our box of McCormick food coloring. We grab spoons and toothpicks, rubber bands and Q-Tips, and begin to discuss décor ideas: pink ombré, a warm sunrise, stripes and polka dots, or a cross crafted out of the aforementioned rubber bands. But before dyeing said Easter eggs , my dad spends part of the morning carefully cooking eggs for our favorite holiday craft. Turns out, there’s no real difference between cooking perfect hard-boiled eggs for a quick breakfast or eggs for Easter. If anything, it’s slightly easier to boil eggs for coloring because you don’t need to worry about any “easy-peel methods”—such as adding baking soda to the boiling water or letting the eggs cool off in an ice bath for five minutes post-cook, pre-peel. Here’s how you do

Costco’s Instant Boba Tea Is Basically Magic

In many major cities in the U.S., the fastest way to get boba tea requires simply walking out the door—these days, shops serving the tapioca-sphere-filled plastic cups crowd in alongside Starbucks and Dunkin’ to fight for the country’s drink dollars. 9 Best Chef’s Knives, According to Pros and Home Cooks Alike

If I could only have one kitchen tool with me on a desert island, it’d have to be a good chef’s knife. It’s incredibly useful (for obvious reasons) and unless I’m carving a turkey or constructing an elaborate wedding cake (though I probably won’t be doing much of either on a desert island), a sharp, lightweight chef’s knife is versatile enough for any occasion. Naturally, I had to ask other home cooks, former restaurant cooks, recipe developers, and cookbook authors for their desert island chef’s knives. From affordable buys to investment-worthy heirlooms, here are the nine best chef’s knives for slicing through butternut squash, dicing onions, and more. After $120 Million in Losses, the U.S. Resumes Avocado Imports From Mexico

Image
Avocados at the grocery store. | Jeremy Hogan/Getty Images But avocado prices are still expected to rise in the short-term Less than a week after the United States Department of Agriculture announced that it would halt avocado exports from Mexico following an anonymous threat directed at one of its inspectors in the country, the agency has officially rescinded that decision. The USDA’s Animal and Plant Inspection Service (APHIS) resumed its inspections of Mexican-grown avocados on February 18 after an agreement between its Mexican counterpart SENASICA and the Association of Avocado Producers and Packers Exporters of Mexico (APEAM). According to a press release , the agreement “enacted additional measures that enhance safety for PHIS inspectors working in the field.” The agency didn’t elaborate on what those safety measures might be but stressed that “the safety of USDA employees simply doing their jobs is of paramount importance.” Even though it only lasted a short time, the USDA
