When is it appropriate to order a gin rickey?

I am in my mid and pretty new to ordering alcohol. I go to a lot of slightly upscale work dinners and finally settled on a gin rickey as my go to drink, but a couple of times I've had the bartender have no idea what it is and come ask, which is super awkward for a work dinner.

Is it better to order it as a gin and soda with lime? I thought gin rickey was pretty well known, but I'd say 4/10 times I get some question or issue.

Thanks! - From a socially anxious girl trying to navigate company dinners
